The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) extends a warm invitation to all South Africans to celebrate the International Day for Biodiversity (IDB) on 22 May, 2024. This year’s theme, “Be part of the Plan,” emphasises the urgent need for collective action to halt and reverse the loss of biodiversity by supporting the implementation of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, also known as the Biodiversity Plan.
International Day for Biodiversity provides a unique opportunity to honour the wonders of life on Earth, spotlighting the richness and diversity of ecosystems that sustain us all. SANBI takes pride in championing efforts to conserve and sustainably utilise South Africa’s remarkable biodiversity. Recognised as one of 17 megadiverse countries globally, South Africa encompasses three renowned biodiversity hotspots: the Cape Floristic Region, Succulent Karoo, and Maputaland-Pondoland-Albany hotspot.
As custodians of our natural heritage, the people of South Africa are the rightful custodians of this abundance of life, with SANBI entrusted to manage biodiversity on their behalf. Our commitment to biodiversity conservation is deeply rooted in inclusivity, recognising that true sustainability requires active participation from all stakeholders. The Biodiversity Plan presents an ambitious strategy to halt and reverse biodiversity loss, necessitating a comprehensive, whole-of-society approach where everyone has a role to play.
Aligned with the vision outlined in the White Paper on Conservation and Sustainable Use of South Africa’s Biodiversity, SANBI reaffirms its dedication to fostering an inclusive, transformed society that lives in harmony with nature. Through our conservation endeavours, community engagement initiatives, and sustainable development efforts, we strive for a future where both people and the planet thrive together.

SANBI encourages every South African to take meaningful steps to protect our biodiversity. Whether it’s planting indigenous plants in their gardens to support local ecosystems or committing to reducing, reusing, and recycling waste to minimise their environmental footprint, everyone can make a difference. Groups can organise community clean-up events to remove litter from local parks, beaches, streets, and other areas in their communities, while families can enjoy nature walks to observe and appreciate local wildlife and plants.
