HUNTEX2023 - 21 to 23 April, Gallagher, Midrand

Preparations for HuntEx2023 to be held at Gallagher Exhibition Centre in Midrand from 21 to 23 April 2023, have already started in May 2022. This year’s show, which takes place shortly before the onset of the hunting season, focuses on firearm dealers of which 23 already confirmed their participation. As with previous events, several foreign firearm manufacturers will use this opportunity to gain a foothold in the South Africa’s commercial firearm sector.

The organisers are confident that HuntEx2023 will not disappoint and will meet the expectations of South Africa’s firearm enthusiasts. The shortage of hunting rifle exhibitors at HuntEx 2022 elicited fierce criticism from certain quarters. In response, Adriaan Woudstra, organiser/owner of HuntEx, explained that the lifting of Covid restrictions in January 2022, left them with only two months to prepare for HuntEx2022.

“It takes five people about ten months to prepare properly for a HuntEx show. Following the lockdown, we only had two staff members left. After considering the short time period and the limited staff, management decided that it would be a fatal error to skip another year. Therefore, we persevered and hosted HuntEx2022, albeit at a much smaller scale than usual. Although we had 275 exhibitors, only 13 were firearm dealers,” said Adriaan.

Furthermore, the firearm industry experienced severe stock shortages and decided to skip the 2022 event. Changing trends in the civil firearm industry contributed to the fluctuating environment as the demand for tactical firearms exceeded that of hunting rifles. This resulted in only a small number of hunting rifles on exhibit during HuntEx2022. Understandably, hunters were very upset and declared that it had been their last visit to HuntEx.

Irrespective of the negative response, exhibitors were satisfied with their sales. Approximately 21 000 people visited HuntEx without having to wear masks, and the majority of visitors were delighted that they could attend the show and mingle. The positive feedback from the regular supporters, encouraged Adriaan and his team to start working towards hosting a better HuntEx in 2023.

Best showcase for hunters and shottists

HuntEx2023 will once again provide the biggest showcase and venue where firearm enthusiasts, hunters, and outdoor fans can meet. During the 3-day event, Gallagher will be filled with exhibitors providing a playground for all ages – men, women, and children – to enjoy.

This year’s show focuses on firearm dealers with the promise of some pleasant surprises for visitors. A handgun shooting range will be available on site where visitors can fire a few shots.

Although firearm exhibitors are usually the main attraction at any HuntEx, an assortment of related products will be available that will trigger the interests of the wider public. This year, visitors can expect to see a wide variety of barrels, rifle stocks, and other firearm related accessories. Manufacturers and dealers of the latest in air rifles and optics are among the exhibitors. Night vision equipment from manufacturers in the US and China are likely to attract interest.

Knife enthusiasts can look forward to special items on display by local and foreign craftsmen and manufacturers. A bespoke knife by an experienced craftsman is often a piece d’ resistance for the avid collector. Knives are to men what shoes are to women – irresistible!

Leather products remain a firm favourite at shows. This year is no exception. Visitors will be able to pick and choose from a variety of bush boots, vellies, belts, rifle bags, and hats. Other clothing suppliers will sell apparel suitable for any hunting condition, terrain, or season, ensuring that hunters are well kitted out for the hunt.

Every year, motor manufacturers launch new technology and gadgets to enhance the functionality of your veld vehicle that will improve the hunting or outdoor experience. With all these purchases, hunters will be ready for their next hunt. New hunting outfitters – especially from the Kalahari – will exhibit at Huntex for the first time this year. Visitors can obtain first-hand information about available game and accommodation when visiting these exhibitors.

The ever-popular free, daily lucky draw in which sought-after items such as a Swarovski DS 70 scope valued at R105 000, Sabatti hunting rifles, Canik pistols and numerous other prizes can be won, is the highlight of the day that creates huge excitement among Huntex visitors. Anyone stands a chance to win!
