Shoot results and stats

BASA’s second shoot for the year at the Magnum United Shooting range was again a huge success. In true Basa spirit the day started for some the Friday evening with cigars and whiskey as “gees vang”. They both made top 10 for the day…

The morning started with the registrations, pleasantries, range and safety briefings, whereafter the shooting started. A total of 82 shooters headed out to the three BASA ranges as well as the CHASA buffalo range.

CHASA Buffalo Range

This forms part of the annual CHASA competition wherein a minimum of 2 scores need to be submitted to be considered and form part of the competition. The shooter starts with an unloaded firearm, 50 metres from the buffalo target, loads 2 rounds on the whistle and shoots 2 chest shots at the facing buffalo. Thereafter the shooter runs, or walks, depending on fitness to 25 metres, loads 2 rounds for 2 shots at the brain. Another short sprint is required to 10 metres, for 2 more shots at the brain. The scoring areas for the 2 chest shots are divided into a 100, 75 and 50 points area. The brain only has a 100-point scoring area, thus a hit or miss. Any shots outside of the respective scoring areas counts as a minus -30 penalty.

Although most shooters did manage to score some points, it has happened in the past that some left the CHASA range with a minus -180-point score and a serious blow to their ego’s. The days winner was Christiaan Swart with a very impressive score of 575 points.

CHASA Range

BASA Range 1

One could argue could be considered a leopard hunt gone wrong. There were 3 big toms’ leopards to be shot and 2 hippos. The shooter started with an open rifle, loaded 2 rounds, and first shot a sitting leopard. Upon reload, another leopard started a “run” with the target on an electronic runner moving from right to left for a heart shot. Thereafter a reload for another heart shot at a leopard. The shooter then had to run to the next shooting position for 2 head shots on 2 different hippos.   Range 1 averaged 1,7 hits for the 5 shots, with Stuart Bell stepping away as the best shot for range 1.

BASA Range 2

At BASA everything bigger is better, but unfortunately for Range 2, the elephant range, even the life size Elephant target gave shooters problems. The range was a full 7 shots on everything one would hope for, or not, on an elephant hunt. It started with the shooter being able to load as many as possible, up to five rounds, with the first 2 shots being side brain shots at the life size bull. This was at a verified 31,6 metres. Thereafter the shooter had 3 shots on a retreating elephant, one spine and 2 hip shots. After 5 shots the shooter had to run forward load 2 more and shoot the static elephant front brain, whereafter it charged for the last brain shot. Although at 7 shots the most for the day at a range, the average hits were per participant was only 1,5. Frik Horn was judged the best for the day. There are 2 honourable mentions for Frederik Cocquyt and Raymond Du Plessis both achieving full scores.

BASA Range 3

The last range was the Buffalo and clay range. The shooter started with 4 rounds already loaded. The first 2 were at hanging clays, then 2 heart/long shots at 2 different buffaloes. Thereafter a change in shooting position was required, for 1 brain shot, after which another quick run walk was required for the 3rd shooting position with the 6th and last shot at another buffalo brain. It was either the clays or the regular buffalo hunting by BASA members that did the trick, with this range having an average of just over 3 hits per participant. Stuart Bell took the top honours again.

All in all, after 18 shots, for some 24 if one includes CHASA range, the day was finished. Stuart Bell deservedly was the top gun. The most hits for the day by any senior male or female, or visitor was 15 hits, achieved by Frederik Cocquyt and Luan Dirker. However, the juniors showed some class for the day. The top junior for day, Jaxon le Roux, shooting a 375 H&H, showed the rest how it should be done with an impressive 16 hits for day. Anjeanette Du Plessis, also a junior, was the top lady for the day.

Thanks to all members and visitors for participating in the day, the RO’s, scorers and other helpers for their help, without whom a day such as this cannot be done.

We hope to see you all on the 20th of May at Magnum Shooting Range for the next BASA shooting day.
